About Musikgarten Curriculum

Musikgarten is the culmination of a life's work for Dr. Lorna Lutz Heyge. Together with Montessori pioneer Audrey Sillick, Dr. Heyge began this revolutionary music and movement program for young children after creating the original Kindermusik name and programs in 1974. Musikgarten, Dr. Heyge's best work, now offers sequential, comprehensive programs from birth to age 9, including Music Makers: At the Keyboard, an exciting piano program specially designed to meet the needs of young children and to prepare them for individual study.

The first three programs, Family Music for Babies, Family Music for Toddlers, and the Cycle of Seasons, follow the varying developmental needs of the youngest children. Babies rock, toddlers move, and preschoolers create and imagine! Then age 4 or 5, children are ready to begin learning the symbolic language of music notation. The Music Makers programs (At Home, Around the World and At the Keyboard) offer these children a fun and creative way to learn to read the language that their body and voice already know from earlier music classes! The program is uniquely effective because it introduces children to basic musical patterns and then builds upon and reinforces that basic vocabulary, until by Music Makers at the Keyboard, children can take those building blocks and use them to compose their own music. In short, Musikgarten doesn’t just expose children to music, it teaches them how to speak and write the musical language for themselves!

Only Musikgarten offers a comprehensive, sequential plan for the musical development of your child from birth to eight years old. Each level, from the infant program to the introductory keyboard stands on it's own and fits the developmental needs of the child. Class time is educational, fun and purposeful - a rarity in today's world which often confuses entertainment with education. Our focus is on building your child's aural (listening) foundation which helps to develop memory, math skills and powers of abstract thinking all in a group setting that builds community!

Unlocking the key to musical development not only opens a world of lifelong musical enjoyment, but evidence shows the entire mind is developed in a way that increases overall learning.
